Firstly I hunt through my boxes of paper and roughly lay out fragments of the right colour and texture. When I am happy with the colour balance and composition of the image, I begin to stick pieces down and carefully craft the detail.
A few years ago myself and my husband Rob went on holiday to Scotland. We took the car ferry from Oban to the Isle of Mull. After disembarking in our rental car, we decided to drive around the whole island. I was struck by raw beauty of the landscape, wide open spaces and quickly changing weather. We became acutely aware of a lack of passing cars and people when we managed to drive over a sharp bolder and get a double puncture. Unable to mend both tyres, we had to wait for help, eventually being rescued by a friendly local mechanic. Opposite our car was a small, deserted crofters cottage. It was a magical spot, but I wondered if I would be happy living in such splendid isolation. (Below is a photo taken on that day) I decided to create a collage loosely based on these memories. In my imagination it's late afternoon, the sun is shining brightly, but imposing dark grey storm clouds are gathering and there is a sense of anticipation of things to come....

Over the last couple of days I have been making a collage of StIves harbour and wishing that I was back in Cornwall... Roll on summer holidays...
This week has been really exciting for me! I made an initial sketch of Bristol harbour on tues.......... I used the drawing above as reference for a collage, but instead collaging onto stretched paper as normal, I worked onto thin plywood. Then using the laser cutting machines in UWE Bristol and with help from the fantastic technician Michelle I cut around my collage................. I am really excited about the result! It's like a giant jigsaw piece. I can't wait to make my next piece.
At last it feels as if summer has arrived. I spent the weekend in the beautiful Sennen Cove, Cornwall. It was well worth getting up really early to make a drawing of our holiday cottage bathed in morning sunshine. It would be hard to imagine a more beautiful start to a day! We took a drive to St Ives, following the winding coast road and sat on the beach with sunbathing holiday makers, who gradually turned pinker as the day wore on!
I had a wonderful afternoon today, sketching at Hengisbury Head in Dorset. There is a perfect strip of golden sand, blue sea and beautiful beach huts, which you access via a ferry boat from Mudeford Quay. A lovelier spot would be hard to find!
I've had a very exciting morning experimenting with a laser cutter. I can collage onto wood and then cut out my picture like a jigsaw piece. This photo may look like a silly shaped piece of burnt wood and a matching hole... but to me it represents a creative breakthrough!
I fixed a camera above my desk and took a photo every 15 minutes to show the evolution of this collage. The finished picture of Welshback, Bristol will be on show at my Open Studio this weekend (Sat 9th & Sun 10th May) as part of Bath Open Studios. Details of the trail can be found at www.newbridgeartstrail.com. Limited edition prints of the image are also available.
On Sat 9th & Sun 10th May, I will be taking part of the Newbridge Arts Trail and opening my Studio to the public from 11am-6pm. Original colleges and prints will be on sale. Details of the trail can be found at www.newbridgeartstrail.com.
My studio is at: 6 Edward Street, Lower Weston, Bath BA1 3BP. Do pop by! A&E departments usually experience a surge in serious injures amongst DIY & gardening enthusiasts over the Easter bank holiday . Therefore please take care when using power tools and sharp blades this weekend. Have a Happy Easter!
Sitting still for two hours on a windy quay chilled my bones. I had to leave the drawing unfinished and scurry back to the hotel to thaw out my fingers!
